The New Definition of Luxury at Sea with Explora Journeys

Written by TRAVELINK | June 2, 2026

Our Virtuoso preferred partners at Explora Journeys are rewriting what it means to sail, and why the world's most discerning travelers are paying attention.

There is a particular kind of traveler who has grown weary of extravagance for its own sake. Someone who can tell the difference between service that is merely attentive and service that is genuinely intuitive. For this traveler, the arrival of Explora Journeys has felt less like a new cruise line and more like a long-overdue correction.

Launched in 2023 under the MSC Group and born from the Aponte family's belief that ocean travel had lost something essential, Explora Journeys positions itself not as a cruise line, but as a luxury lifestyle brand that happens to move through water. The distinction matters. Where traditional ocean travel has long organized itself around the ship as spectacle, Explora builds its identity around the journey itself: the sensation of waking to a different latitude, the unhurried pace of a life briefly uncomplicated, and the quiet understanding that the finest address in any city is, in fact, a set of coordinates.

The Ships: A Floating Hotel, Not a Floating City

The first thing guests notice upon boarding is the sense of considered scale. With 461 oceanfront suites per vessel, Explora's ships carry roughly a third of the passenger load typical of mainstream luxury competitors. The effect is immediate: corridors breathe, pool decks invite lingering rather than negotiating for chairs, and staff who outnumber guests can deliver the kind of service that requires actual human attention.

Every suite faces the ocean. Every suite has a private furnished terrace. The Ocean Residences stretch to 3,015 square feet, larger than many urban apartments, and include a dedicated Residence Manager, priority embarkation, a welcome bottle of Dom Pérignon, and private driver service ashore. Even the entry-level Ocean View Suites open to unobstructed sea views, with heated bathroom floors waiting each morning.

The ships feel less like vessels and more like boutique hotels built by someone who understands the difference between luxury and opulence. Four pools, including one adults-only and one with a retractable glass roof for year-round use, anchor an outdoor deck spanning over 27,000 square feet of open-air space with 64 private cabanas. The Lobby Bar, frequently likened to the entrance hall of a European design hotel, sets the tone from the first moment aboard.

Explora I and Explora II are currently sailing worldwide itineraries. Explora III joins the fleet in summer 2026, followed by Explora IV and V by year-end 2027, gradually expanding the line's global reach without sacrificing intimacy.

What's Included: The Art of Everything Covered

Explora Journeys operates on an all-inclusive model that goes well beyond bundled drinks packages and wi-fi upgrades. The base fare is built to eliminate the petty accounting that can quietly corrode even a remarkable trip.

Beverages: Unlimited fine wines, champagne, premium spirits, specialty coffees, and soft drinks, available any time, anywhere on board, including in-suite.

Dining: Nine of eleven dining venues are fully inclusive, from refined Italian tasting menus to all-day Mediterranean feasting.

Connectivity: Unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the ship, with no daily charges or packages to sort through.

Wellness: Full access to the Ocean Wellness spa thermal suite, all group fitness classes, and the fitness center.

Service: Twice-daily housekeeping, evening turndown, shoeshine service, and 24-hour concierge, with no additional gratuities expected.

Shore Transfers: Premium shuttle service from port to city center at every stop, a detail most lines charge separately for.

For guests booking Grand Journeys, itineraries of 14 days or more, the inclusions go further. Curated destination experiences, guided tastings of champagne, wine, gin, whisky, and cognac, hands-on workshops at the Chef's Kitchen, and weeklong Ocean Wellness retreats featuring Chakra Healing Meditation and ocean-inspired Gong Baths under the stars are all part of the program.

Culinary World: Eleven Voices, One Table

Explora Journeys earned the No. 2 ranking among luxury cruise lines for dining from U.S. News & World Report for 2026, a distinction that surprises no one who has spent an evening at Fil Rouge or given over an afternoon to the unhurried pace of Sakura's pan-Asian kitchen. The culinary program reads less like a restaurant directory and more like a considered argument for the pleasures of eating well.

Anthology: Elevated Italian tasting menus by master chef Franck Garanger, the ship's signature premium experience.

Sakura: Immersive pan-Asian cuisine; the pool-adjacent setting on Deck 5 is among the most beautiful spaces at sea.

Fil Rouge: French artistry and classical technique, reinterpreted with the lightness of the ocean air.

Marble & Co. Grill: Premium cuts and dry-aged selections for serious carnivores.

Med Yacht Club: The best of the Mediterranean: olive oils, fresh catches, regional cheeses, casual but never careless.

Emporium Marketplace: All-day dining with global breadth and the quality to hold its own against the dedicated restaurants.

For Grand Journey guests, extended gourmet menus, guided wine and spirit tastings, and a personalized consultation with an onboard Wine Curator (available on Explora III and IV) add further depth to the experience.

Ocean Wellness: Restoration as Philosophy

The Ocean Wellness spa spans over 700 square meters, housing eleven treatment rooms, including two private spa suites with outdoor relaxation terraces. The design evokes the ocean itself: cool surfaces, ambient sound, and the feeling that time moves at a different rate than it does on land.

Treatments include Medi Luxe skincare using Dr. Levy Switzerland formulations designed to stimulate collagen production and address visible signs of aging, alongside the Ritual of Ocean Renewal, a full-body experience combining exfoliation, scalp massage, and facial lymphatic drainage. Sound therapy, holistic facials, and deep-tissue massage complete a menu built around genuine restoration.

Beyond individual treatments, the wellness approach runs through the entire ship: a panoramic running track, over 2,900 square feet of fitness facilities with current equipment, outdoor sports courts, and the weeklong Ocean Wellness retreats for Grand Journey guests with programs built around mindfulness, movement, and recovery.

Where Explora Sails: The Celebrated and the Undiscovered

Itinerary design is perhaps what most sets Explora apart. Rather than assembling a predictable list of the same well-worn capitals, the line builds routes that pair celebrated ports with lesser-traveled ones: the Azores and Madeira alongside Lisbon; Skiathos and Mahón alongside Barcelona; Rovinj alongside Athens. The result is travel that rewards curiosity rather than simply confirming what guests already knew was beautiful.

Mediterranean & Adriatic — From Civitavecchia to Piraeus, from Portofino to Istanbul, the Mediterranean itineraries weave the familiar alongside the forgotten. A morning in Skiathos instead of the Amalfi coast. An afternoon in St. Tropez's quieter harbor inlets instead of the main strip.

Caribbean & Atlantic Islands — Winter sailings explore the diversity of the Caribbean islands, each with distinct language, cuisine, and tradition, alongside Atlantic detours to Lanzarote, the Azores, and Madeira, where volcanic landscape and maritime history meet the ocean's edge.

Northern Europe & Scandinavia — Summer sailings from Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Reykjavik trace coastlines of extraordinary drama: fjords, midnight sun, and the clean geometry of Nordic cities, with ports that rarely appear on mainstream itineraries.

Asia & Beyond — Departures from Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Bangkok open routes that place ancient temples alongside gleaming towers, street food culture alongside Michelin-starred kitchens, all experienced from the vantage point of a private terrace at anchor.

The Verdict: An Ocean State of Mind

Explora Journeys describes its philosophy as an "Ocean State of Mind," and once on board, the meaning becomes clear. It is a sense of calm and clarity that emerges when the pace of everyday life gives way to the rhythm of the sea. Days unfold naturally between sunrise and sunset, while each upcoming destination sparks a quiet sense of anticipation.

For travelers seeking more than the familiar rhythms of luxury travel, Explora offers something truly rare: a sense of discovery. Beyond elegant suites and exceptional dining, it invites guests to disconnect from the expected, immerse themselves in the journey, and embrace the experience of being fully present every step of the way.

The fleet is expanding: Explora III arrives in summer 2026, Explora IV and V follow by year-end 2027, and a 128-day inaugural World Journey launches in 2029. For anyone who has been watching, this is a good time to book.

Journey fares begin from approximately $4,500 per suite for seven-night voyages, with all inclusions above. Grand Journeys of 14 nights or more offer enhanced programming and deeper destination immersion. The Explora Club loyalty program, launched April 2025, rewards returning guests across five tiers from Classic to Diamond, with benefits shaped to individual preferences.
